Amethyst is a variety of quartz. Its colour can vary from light lilac to dark purple, depending on the amount of iron present inside its crystal structure. The more iron, the deeper the purple colour. Under the influence of (bright) sunlight amethyst can also change colour. When amethyst is heated, it becomes yellow and is called citrine. This can occur naturally in the earth, but can also be manmade.
It is believed that amethyst has a protecting and purifying function. In old Greece the crystal was first called amethustos. This translates to not drunk, because of the sobering and clarifying effect amethyst is believed to have.
